Community Impact

The Impact Grants Initiative

How IGI Works

Donors involved in this approach identify pressing needs in the community, work together to focus the scope and define realistic outcomes, elicit and evaluate grant proposals, and conduct site visits that provide an “on-the-ground” look at how these programs function. Then IGI donor-participants collectively select a group of organizations to fund and work with them to set goals that will result in measurable change. Together, they organize a learning community to help share insights and develop best practices. Many IGI donor-participants remain advisors to and advocates for the funded organizations for the duration of the multi-year grant to help ensure their success.

First IGI Grant Round: Engaging Young Jewish Adults
in Jewish Life

Capturing the hearts and minds of young Jewish Adults was the focus of the first IGI grant round. In an era when technology allows people to individualize their tastes for entertainment, information and leisure into very narrow categories, connecting with young adults has never been more challenging. To that end, the Federation set out to identify innovative organizations with fresh approaches to engaging adults between 21-45 years of age in Jewish life. Twenty-six Federation donors and community members spent six months evaluating proposals/conducting site visits and ultimately, selected 7 programs (from an initial pool of 37 exceptional applicants) to fund. The programs awarded funding represent emerging organizations with strong social entrepreneur leaders at the forefront of engaging young adults through new and innovative efforts.

These grantees will receive core operating support grants ranging from $77,000 to $150,000 over a three year period.
