Art as Midrash is an exhibition by Claire Sherman, an art quilter, and Barbara Cymrot, a bead worker, both of whom use distinctive textiles and colorful beads to explore Jewish themes. The exhibition weaves together new and existing pieces by these two artists, bringing a fresh perspective to the interpretation of biblical and other Jewish texts, one that is both visual and tactile.

Texture, patterns, and the interplay of beautiful colors are Barbara Cymrot’s focus in beading. A finalist for the year 2000 Spertus Institute Judaica Prize, she has exhibited her beadwork at galleries, open studios, the “To Life” Street Fair in Palo Alto, and the Jewish Community Library. Teaching classes and workshops allows her to share her knowledge and techniques and to help students develop their own excitement for Judaica and beaded work.

Claire Sherman creates quilts, sculpture, and Jewish ritual objects out of textiles and clay. After receiving her BFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design, she spent a year in Israel, where she studied Hebrew at the World Union of Jewish Students. The walls, archways, and roofs of Israel's ancient architecture have had a lasting impact on her work. Claire has taught art workshops in papercutting and Jewish ritual objects for adults and children throughout California.
