Alive! A la vie! Children of Buchenwald

Lehrhaus Judaica and the San Francisco Public Library present Alive! A la vie! – a photo exhibition of the saved children of Buchenwald, debuting in the United States in 2015. The exhibition will be featured at the San Francisco Public Library’s Skylight Gallery (100 Larkin Street, open daily) January 10-March 15. A series of free programs are scheduled at the library in support of the exhibition.

These bi-lingual photographic panels (English and French) were created by the renowned French-Jewish humanitarian organization OSE (Œuvre de secours aux enfant), which saved hundreds of Jewish refugee children before, during, and after World War II. The exhibition — previously on display in Jerusalem and Paris — looks at life before the Holocaust, ghettos and life during the war, the Buchenwald camp, and life after the war.  [Above: Buchenwald survivor Rav Israel Meir Lau, future Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel; Copyright: OSE/CDJC Mémorial de la Shoah.]

Alive! shares heartwarming stories about the survivors’ lives into adulthood, including marriages and the birth of their children. The bond the survivors shared after being freed from Buchenwald comes to life through stories and photos.
