The Impact Grants Initiative
An Engaged, Empowered and Effective Approach to Grantmaking

The Impact Grants Initiative (IGI) is an engaged and empowered approach to grantmaking modeled on social venture philanthropy. IGI provides donor-participants with a “hands-on” way to make a real difference in our community by making high impact grants that focus on a pressing community need. IGI provides innovative Jewish programs within traditional organizations or new nonprofits with the multi-year funding they need to be successful, as well as the type of nonfinancial support that helps them thrive. And ultimately, the grants awarded as a result of this new model help build a more vibrant, connected and enduring Jewish Community.
A Model for Success. A Model for the Future
The results of our first grant round demonstrate that this innovative allocation model shows great promise for the future. This approach will result in more effective grant making because:
- It uses measurable outcomes as a key criteria of success.
- It provides grants for a longer duration: typically, a three-year period.
- It empowers organizations by providing donor-participants with a “hands-on” way to make a real difference in our community, and a more involving experience with the Federation
- It requires focused results that support innovation in both program delivery and leadership.
This model reflects the Federation’s move towards more results-oriented grantmaking and better positions the organization to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future. This effort is funded by a $1,000,000 allocation from the Jewish Community Federation Endowment Fund, which will be distributed over a three-year period.
