San Francisco Hillel

Scope & Deliverables

As part of its strategic plan to grow across the city, SF Hillel is in the early stages of investigating different uses for the Hillel House, located at 33 Banbury Drive in San Francisco, a few blocks from San Francisco State University.  The house is a nice, warm, inviting space for San Francisco State students to hang out near campus but we are out-growing it for our day-to-day uses.  It also does not provide sufficient space to hold large events (>50-75 persons) and is several blocks away from the main student thoroughfares, making our student engagement far from optimal. The house is also limited as an office space or location for Hillel staff to efficiently perform their various functions and in the broader San Francisco Jewish community.

As SF Hillel expands our presence to other San Francisco college campuses (USF, Hastings, Golden Gate, UCSF, etc.), we need to gather expert assessments of the optimal locations for our office, our student and event spaces at San Francisco State, as well as our services for other San Francisco campuses.  We are looking for real estate consulting on the following:

1.  What is the value of the SF Hillel house today, as is, and with any proposed upgrades?

2.  What costs are required, if any, to bring the house up to market standards?

3.  What other options exist for SF Hillel to rent or own meeting space on or near SFSU and other SF colleges?

4.  What other options exist for SF Hillel to rent or own office space in San Francisco?

The ideal deliverable would be a brief written report or presentation summarizing the work and findings and containing recommendations on how to proceed along the path jointly agreed upon by the consultant and the task force.

Any decisions would be taken in consultation with our community partners, and our primary criteria would be to improve the way we serve students at SF State and our other schools.

Project Results

The SF Hillel Board will incorporate this very valuable assessment and expertise into its strategic plan and it will likely form the basis of a capital campaign should the Board calculate such a campaign furthers the organization's strategic goals. It is quite likely that the consultant's work will significantly influence part of the long term direction of San Francisco Hillel.
